The Philadelphia Eagles have had a rough season so far, but the team is looking to change that with a new running back. They drafted Miles Sanders in the second round of this year’s NFL Draft and he has been turning heads ever since.
The eagles run defense 2021 is a topic that has been discussed by many. It seems that the Philadelphia Eagles have been able to score big time in the draft due to their good karma.
Prior to the signing of MIles Sanders in 2019, the Philadelphia Eagles had a reputation for being uninterested in the running back position.
Josh Adams (who is now not on an NFL team) was their top rusher in 2018, with 511 yards. Even in 2017, when they won the Super Bowl, their rushing game was heavily dependent on the “running back by committee” strategy.
With 766 yards rushing, veteran LeGarrette Blount completed the season as the team’s top rusher. He was, however, often replaced by Corey Clement and Jay Ajayi. The Eagles had made it clear that they would not commit to a single lead back. During the 2019 NFL Draft, all of that changed.
When Miles Sanders was drafted in the second round, the Philadelphia Eagles were stunned.
The Eagles have opted to reinvest in the ground game after a disappointing 2018 season that saw them crawl into the playoffs as a Wild Card club. During the summer, they acquired Jordan Howard, a bigger-bodied running back.
Howie Roseman, the Eagles’ general manager, wasn’t optimistic about finding a younger running back in the draft, so getting some insurance in Howard was a critical first step in rebuilding the RB room.
However, the Eagles’ and Roseman’s preferred rookie running back became available in the second round, much to their astonishment. Because of Sanders’ Pennsylvania origins, they did a lot of scouting on him and leaped at the chance to get him on draft day.
“Miles was a popular among the employees. A favorite of the coaching staff. A favorite among the crew. A favorite among the front-desk staff. Following the selection, Roseman remarked, “He reminded us of some previous guys we’ve had around here” (Philadelphia Inquirer).

Offensively and defensively, Roseman is a sucker for linemen. It was impossible to choose Sanders in the first round of the draft. However, the Eagles’ veteran executive joked about the prospect of getting their next franchise in the second round in the days preceding up to the event.
“This is a man,” says the narrator. “We came together as a team two weeks ago and put together some hypotheticals,” Roseman added. “We made a joke about Miles falling to us as he did today,” said the group. ‘Let’s acquire some positive karma,’ I remarked in coach Staley’s (RBs coach Duce Staley) office. ‘Perhaps Miles will collapse.’
Was it a case of “good karma” that Sanders was able to land with the Eagles in 2019? Or did Roseman and the Eagles read the draft board correctly that night? In any case, Philadelphia was ecstatic with the result.
The Philadelphia Eagles are still figuring out what role their running back will play.
While Roseman talked Sanders up as the next LeSean McCoy when he first drafted him, his position in Philly has remained a mystery.
When he was given the starting job in the second part of the season, he had a fantastic rookie season. He ended with 1,327 scrimmage yards and a close bond with former quarterback Carson Wentz.
Sanders, on the other hand, had a significant task the next season. He has a history of drops and fumbles, and former head coach Doug Pederson seldom used him in defeats.
By 2021, most Eagles supporters are hoping that the team’s new coaching staff would place a bigger focus on getting Sanders the ball. Through two games, he has 172 scrimmage yards. He, on the other hand, is averaging just 14 running attempts per game.
If Roseman’s goal of Sanders being the Eagles’ next great franchise RB comes true, he’ll need a lot more touches in the future.
