Jaguars Owner Shad Khan’s Curious Attempt at Reassuring Urban Meyer Should Only Raise More Questions About His Future in Jacksonville

On Monday, NFL owner Shad Khan said he was “confident” in Urban Meyer’s ability to return as the head coach of Florida football. But what does that statement mean? There are plenty of reasons for concern about whether or not Meyer will remain with the Jaguars past 2019., including his own cryptic comments on how much longer he plans to stay there before jumping ship again

The “jacksonville jaguars owner” is a person who owns the Jacksonville Jaguars. Shad Khan has been in charge of the team since 2013, but now that Urban Meyer has taken over as head coach for the Florida Gators, there are many questions about his future with the team.

Highlights of the article:

  • Shad Khan, the owner of the Jacksonville Jaguars, complimented his players despite an abysmal 1-6 start.
  • Khan also gave an unusual statement of support to Urban Meyer, the head coach.
  • If Meyer comes to the Jaguars in 2022, don’t be shocked if he cleans house.

Many of us were able to forget about Urban Meyer’s terrible first season as an NFL head coach after the Jaguars’ shock win against the Miami Dolphins in Week 6 and ensuing bye week. What was the deal with the video and the lady, again?

Shad Khan, the owner of the Jaguars, didn’t forget. The experienced owner sought to give Meyer the dreaded vote of confidence in an effort to thank his players for persevering through an abysmal start to the 2021 season… and failed spectacularly.

Depending on who you ask, things in Jacksonville are improving. You know, once you look away from the team’s -80 point differential and the on-field product.

The Jaguars, to their credit, kept things tight over a tough early-season run against three teams that would be in the playoffs if the season ended today: the Arizona Cardinals, Cincinnati Bengals, and Tennessee Titans.

Khan stated he couldn’t “ask for anything more” from his players in a recent interview with NFL Media. It’s difficult to disagree, given how the team handled the repercussions from Meyer’s controversy involving a video showcasing him with an Ohio woman and averted absolute catastrophe.

“This is where the outer impression differs greatly from the inner impression… There are many moments, and I’m not just talking about sports, when what you read differs dramatically from what you see in real life, and this is one of them. I’m not shocked; I have faith in us.”

Shad Khan

According to Ian Rapaport of NFL Media, Khan is “all-in” on Meyer, according to sources. When the Jaguars’ owner talked with Rapoport, though, he had a different tone and pitch.

Khan said, “I believe this is NFL football.” “You’re always on stage, and you have to be very self-aware.” But I’ve gone over this so many times that there’s not much more I can say.”

Khan subsequently told Rapoport that he “definitely” believes Meyer, but those remarks speak for themselves.

Khan could have been better off saying nothing at all, particularly coming off a humbling Week 8 defeat.

Khan has seen four head coaches, ranging from Mike Mularkey to Meyer, attempt to convert the Jaguars into a consistent winner since taking over the franchise in 2012. In that time, the squad has only had one winning season.

Khan is correct in complimenting his players’ handling of the Meyer issue. The issue is the general ‘owner-speak’ about how much he believes in those individuals and the club as a whole, despite the fact that they’ve performed terribly in the first two months of the season.

On the one hand, throughout their defeats, the Jaguars have been competitive. But it only goes so far, particularly when talking about a club that has been rebuilding for more than a decade. When the squad’s sole win comes against a free-falling Dolphins team, the fans, and most likely the players and coaches, don’t want to hear about how hard they’re trying.

At the league’s owners meetings, Khan made such remarks. Given how overwhelmed the Jaguars appeared in a 31-7 away defeat to the Seattle Seahawks in Week 8, he could have waited until the conclusion of the season. Jacksonville was penalized 12 times for 93 yards and needed a score with 1:53 remaining to avoid being shut out for the first time since Oct. 11, 2009, when they were also shut out by the Seahawks.

By recovering the next onside kick for a 44-yard score, the Seahawks effectively ended the Jaguars’ existence.

Meyer will almost certainly need to make substantial changes this summer if he wants to control his own fate.

Oh, my goodness. Today, the Jaguars are going for the following leaders:

12 Jamal Agnew 10 Dan Arnold 8 Carlos Hyde

Trevor Lawrence’s throws account for 60% of his total.

Given Khan’s statements and the fact that Meyer was not fired during the incident, it doesn’t look like the Jaguars will be the ones to break up with Meyer in the near future. Meyer will not return in 2022 unless he resigns for one reason or another (a position in college football) (retirement, followed by a job in college football).

If Meyer is re-signed in 2022, don’t be shocked if the Jaguars make him clean house. His staff’s early results aren’t encouraging in the least. Joe Cullen’s first-year defensive squad is averaging 29 points per game and had two instances of 12 men on the field in Week 8.

Meyer may want to know why three players — receiver Jameis Agnew, tight end Dan Arnold, and backup running back Carlos Hyde — accounted for 30 of Lawrence’s 54 targets against the Seahawks if offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell is still in charge.

Meyer also hired former Iowa strength coach Chris Doyle to assume the same post in February, despite the fact that Doyle negotiated a separation agreement with the institution in 2020 amid allegations of bullying and bigotry. Following widespread anger, Doyle resigned the next day.

At the very least, Khan may rest easy knowing that the Jaguars are still valued at over $2 billion by Forbes. That should assist things along.
