The Chiefs were looking to make a franchise-altering draft pick, but needed the approval of the NFL’s Board of Governors before they could do so. They ultimately decided to pass on drafting Sam Darnold and instead take Patrick Mahomes II with their first overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft.

The Kansas City Chiefs needed a massive seal of approval before making a controversial franchise-altering draft pick. They selected Georgia running back Sony Michel with the 11th overall pick in the first round. Read more in detail here: chiefs first round pick 2021.

The Kansas City Chiefs’ move to trade up and select Patrick Mahomes is now widely regarded as one of the greatest in NFL history.

Kansas City acquired their future quarterback as a consequence of a draft-day trade, which led to a Super Bowl victory in 2019. Mahomes is the greatest quarterback in the NFL right now, and he was rewarded with a $503 million contract extension last year. It’s fair to conclude that the decision was a success for all parties concerned.

However, the Chiefs’ choice to move up and get Mahomes wasn’t as straightforward as they like to portray it. In fact, before pulling the trigger, the team’s front office wanted to get a big thumbs up.

For Mahomes, the Chiefs had to move up.

Despite having experienced quarterback Alex Smith on the roster, the Chiefs were considering a move for a new quarterback at the top of the draft class. Mitchell Trubisky, Deshaun Watson, and Patrick Mahomes were expected to lead the 2017 quarterback class.

The Chiefs’ quest for a new franchise quarterback is complicated by the fact that they started the night with the No. 27 overall pick. Going into the top five was impossible, and moving into the top ten would be too expensive.

Given the Bills’ willingness to trade down that year, the Chiefs’ front staff decided that a deal with the Buffalo Bills at No. 10 made the most sense. The New Orleans Saints (No. 11 overall) and the New York Giants (No. 12 overall) have also shown interest in Mahomes, according to Kansas City. If they wanted a chance at Mahomes, they needed to go ahead of them.

The front management and coaching staff of the Kansas City Chiefs were completely in accord. The only stumbling block? They had to get permission from the team’s owner.

Before pulling the trigger on the trade-up, the Chiefs required ownership permission.

The Chiefs had to obtain permission from the organization’s most powerful man before they could trade from selection No. 27 to pick No. 10.

They needed the owner’s permission.

Any deal involving a first-round selection must be approved by the owner, according to the Chiefs’ policy. Clark Hunt, the owner in this case, was more than happy to help.

“It was not an easy choice for me,” Hunt remarked. “However, all things considered, it was not a difficult choice.” It was an easy choice because the Chiefs could acquire a quarterback who might be a franchise quarterback in the future.”

From a value standpoint, the Chiefs’ last trade-up for Mahomes cost them a lot of money. They handed up their first-round selection in 2017, a third-round pick in 2017, and a first-round pick in 2018. The Chiefs, on the other hand, seem to be pleased with their investment.

Mahomes not only won the MVP and Super Bowl, but he’s also set to be the Chiefs’ starting quarterback for the next decade or more. In today’s NFL, he embodies the definition of a franchise quarterback.

If it weren’t for the Kansas City Chiefs’ very risky trade, Patrick Mahomes would have almost teamed up with an NFL legend.
