NFL Insider Goes Wild on Twitter After Trey Lance 80-Yard Touchdown Pass

The NFL insider on Twitter goes wild after Trey Lance’s 80-yard touchdown pass.

The trey lance college is a touchdown pass that was caught during the NFL game between the Houston Texans and the Kansas City Chiefs.

It’s often difficult not to overreact to preseason NFL football games. It’s the first time we’ve seen players in action after months of conjecture, speculation, and projection. NFL insider Ian Rapoport is the best person to ask about this. Even he can be caught up in the first on-field action of the new season, which is why, after seeing San Francisco 49ers rookie quarterback Trey Lance deliver a stunning 80-yard touchdown pass, he went crazy and had to tell himself to calm down on Twitter.

Trey Lance is a promising NFL quarterback.

Trey Lance was meant to be an NFL player growing up in Marshall, Minnesota. His father, Carlton, played college football at Southwest Minnesota State and later tried out for the Houston Oilers and San Francisco 49ers at their training camps. While Carlton’s real NFL ambition never came true, he did play in the CFL for the Saskatchewan Roughriders and the World League for the London Monarchs. Per GoBison.com.

Trey was already on pace to follow in his father’s footsteps by the time he was in high school. He was a quarterback and strong safety who was named to the All-District team three times and the Minnesota Vikings All-State Team in 2017. According to Rivals.com, his accomplishments earned him a scholarship at North Dakota State as a two-star dual-threat quarterback.

Lance’s development accelerated in North Dakota. He gained weight, going from 190 to 221 pounds, and led the Bison to a 16-0 record and a national title in 2019, his redshirt freshman season, while also winning a plethora of FCS and Missouri Valley Football Conference awards.

Lance only appeared in one game in 2020 owing to the FSC season being postponed due to COVID-19. He chose to sit out the 2021 season in order to focus on the impending NFL Draft.

Kyle Shanahan of San Francisco, who moved up to No. 3 in the draft to get a quarterback, defied expectations by picking Lance above Alabama’s Mac Jones and Ohio State’s Justin Fields.

Lance scored a spectacular long touchdown in his first preseason game.

15 August 2021 — Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet)

Trey Lance is currently competing with Jimmy Garoppolo, the team’s current quarterback, for the starting job in 2021. We all know who Jimmy G is after four up and down, injury-plagued seasons in the Bay Area. This preseason, it’ll be interesting to see Lance’s skill set.

Lance showed off some of the talents that made him such a high draft selection and gave his head coach so much trust in his first preseason game against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Lance’s second-ever NFL throw occurred late in the first quarter, and it was a significant event. He took the snap, rolled left, planted his feet, scanned the field, and tossed the ball 45 yards downfield into the air with ease. The ball sailed over the heads of two defenders and landed in stride with his receiver, who raced into the end zone for an 80-yard score.

The play enthralled the home crowd, the 49ers’ sideline, and 49ers supporters worldwide. Even a seasoned NFL watcher like Rapoport couldn’t help but be impressed by the skill on show.

The NFL insider tweeted a video of the play eight times, each time saying, “Do not overreact to the preseason.”

In the NFL, there is a long history of great quarterbacks from tiny schools.

Trey Lance will join a prestigious list of small-school quarterbacks who have made their impact in the NFL if he becomes the franchise quarterback that Shanahan and the club believe he can be.

Lance is often likened to Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen due to his mix of running and throwing abilities (and recency bias). However, these are only the most recent instances of college football signal-callers making a name for themselves in the NFL.

Lance’s NDSU Bison teammates Carson Wentz and Garappolo (Eastern Illinois), as well as another Eastern Illinois Panther, Tony Romo, have all found success at the next level. Joe Flacco of Delaware is a Super Bowl champion, while Ben Roethlisberger of Miami (OH) is the most successful current example of a small-school quarterback who has made it big.

There were others before these quarterbacks made their mark on the NFL. Alcorn State’s Steve McNair, Northern Iowa’s Kurt Warner, Delaware’s Rich Gannon, Morehead State’s Phil Simms, and Milton College’s Dave Kreig are among the best players to ever play in the NFL.

When Rapoport watched Lance demonstrate his abilities, these little school marvels were most likely the first thing that sprang to mind. While the NFL Network host is correct about preseason, it will be difficult not to overreact if we see a lot more of Lance like this.
