Ja Morant, the 20-year-old guard for the Memphis Grizzlies, has refused to sign an endorsement deal with Starbucks because he does not want to be associated with a company that supports “the system”.

The Memphis Grizzlies are a team on the rise. Last season, the Grizzlies, led by 2019 second-round selection Ja Morant, returned to the playoffs after three years of watching from home. They’ll now try to get back on track and compete in the difficult Western Conference.
Morant will have to be at his best throughout the season if Memphis wants to prosper. It will almost certainly need him spending many early mornings on the court or in the gym. On the other hand, don’t expect the 22-year-old to stop for a cup of coffee on the way.

Zion Williamson deservedly dominated the 2019 NBA Draft. Morant, on the other hand, was a great consolation prize for the Grizzlies.
From the start, the former Murray State Racer shown his NBA preparedness. Morant scored 30 points in his third game of his career and had a double-double in his tenth. Overall, Ja completed his first season with 17.8 points and 7.3 assists per game, beating out Williamson for Rookie of the Year honors.
In 2020-21, Morant was able to escape a sophomore slump. The 6-foot-3 point guard increased his average points per game to 19.1 while dishing out 7.4 assists. Fans received their first taste of “Playoff Ja” against the one-seed Utah Jazz, when the 22-year-old averaged 30.2 points. Morant’s finest game came in Game 2, when he went 15-for-26 from the field and scored 47 points.
However, despite a 47-point performance and a pair of double-doubles, Morant and the Grizzlies were unable to defeat the Jazz. Memphis was eliminated in the first round of the playoffs for the third time in five years. However, if Morant can carry over some of his own postseason success into the next season, he should be in line for an All-Star berth and perhaps more.

Morant, like many Grizzlies fans, is looking forward to the start of the season. He’s so excited about the season that he told The Daily Memphian that he got up an hour earlier than usual simply to be ready for it.
Many coffee lovers know that getting up earlier than usual implies you’ll have a terrible day until the first cup kicks in. However, Morant, who is youthful and sprightly, claims that the additional caffeine is unnecessary.
“I’m not a coffee drinker.” I’m a young man. I’m 22 years old. There’s something wrong if I need coffee right now.”

With such remark, Morant will find some supporters, but he will also find many opponents. A National Coffee Association study from 2020 showed that 50% of Americans aged 18-24 consume at least one cup of coffee every day, in addition to all the Starbucks and Dunkin’ locations he just outraged. Coffee is consumed by 62 percent of Americans on a daily basis, with most people drinking more than one cup.
The Memphis Grizzlies may be sleeping on the league’s radar.
Morant isn’t one of those people who needs a pot of coffee to get going. Who knows whether his teammates, especially the older ones, feel the same way. Regardless, the Grizzlies are heading in the right way in their pursuit for a championship.
Memphis has had a quiet offseason. Its most significant move occurred shortly before the draft, when Jonas Valanciunas and selections were traded to the New Orleans Pelicans in exchange for Steven Adams, Eric Bledsoe, and the 10th overall pick. The Grizzlies ultimately traded Bledsoe and added previous lottery selections Kris Dunn and Jarrett Culver, as well as Stanford forward Ziaire Williams, to the team.
Dillon Brooks, Kyle Anderson, and Jarrett Jackson Jr. are all in the starting lineup, so Adams and Morant should help round out the group. Last season, Brooks and Anderson both set career highs in scoring, averaging 17.2 and 12.4 points per game, respectively. However, the 6-foot-11 Jackson, the fourth overall selection in 2018, played in just 11 games last season after averaging 17.4 points and 1.6 blocks in his sophomore season.
Just making the playoffs will be a challenge for the Grizzlies. However, no coffee is required to feel energised about Morant and his teammates as they enter the new season.
