The Baltimore Ravens have had a rough training camp and preseason in 2021. Despite being undefeated in the preseason, the team’s locker room has been plagued by injuries. J.K. Dobbins, the starting running back, just suffered an ACL injury. Marquise Brown and Sammy Watkins, both wide receivers, have returned to the field after missing considerable time. Their return gives Lamar Jackson and the Ravens offense a significant boost.

Sammy Watkins is in his seventh season in the NFL, and his first with Baltimore. In the offseason, the Ravens signed him to a one-year deal for up to $6 million.
Watkins was with the Kansas City Chiefs during the previous three seasons, catching 129 receptions for 1,613 yards and eight touchdowns. He hasn’t lived up to the expectations after being selected by the Buffalo Bills in 2014. Scouts saw him as a potential game-breaker in the NFL coming out of college.
The Clemson graduate had a successful collegiate career with the Tigers, where he showed a penchant for creating huge plays after the catch. In 2015, he had his finest NFL season, with 60 catches for 1,047 yards and nine touchdowns. He’s showed glimpses at the next level, but he hasn’t been able to consistently deliver.
Watkins has struggled with injuries in the past, and he sustained another one at Ravens training camp. Due to an unknown ailment, he missed several sessions. Head coach John Harbaugh told ESPN’s Jamison Hensley, “It’s not a severe injury.” The squad must be relieved to have him back in action.
Because of bad play-calling and receivers failing to get open, Lamar Jackson and the offense struggled at times. Greg Roman, the offensive coordinator, is hopeful Watkins can come in, make some plays, and help the offense progress. To be ready for Week 1, he’ll need to rapidly build chemistry with Jackson.
Marquise Brown, Lamar Jackson’s favorite teammate, is also returning.
Both Lamar Jackson and Marquise Brown are from South Florida, thus they share a close connection. The connection between a quarterback and his receivers is critical. The Oklahoma native has established himself as a favorite target for No. 8.
Brown was targeted 71 times as a rookie, and then 100 times in 2020. In his second season, he had 58 catches for 789 yards and eight touchdowns. The second-year wideout battled with drops at times, but he also had some big plays.
Brown will have to improve much more in year three if the Ravens are to make a long postseason run. Because of his little height, he may never develop into a genuine No. 1 receiver. Greg Roman’s scheme, on the other hand, hasn’t been kind to the young receiver.
Throughout training camp, he battled a hamstring issue that kept him out of all three preseason games. Another pleasant sight was his return to the field. Brown will attempt to shake off the rust and make up for the time he has missed. If the Ravens’ offense wants to improve in 2021, they will need his speed and explosive playmaking abilities.
What is the current state of the Ravens’ receiving corps?
The starting wide receivers for the 2021 season are Marquise Brown and Sammy Watkins. Despite their playmaking abilities, neither player has proved to be a reliable No. 1 choice.
The wide receiver room, on the other hand, is still not completely functional. Rashod Bateman, a first-round draft selection, sustained a groin injury during training camp and had surgery recently. Miles Boykin, the Ravens’ third-round selection in 2019, suffered a hamstring issue. Both players have been placed on the injured reserve list by Baltimore, which means they will be sidelined until at least Week 4.
Boykin has yet to live up to expectations, but Bateman had great hopes. The Minnesota native has the potential to be the Ravens’ top receiver. In his absence, maybe one of the three of Devin Duvernay, James Proche II, and Tylan Wallace will emerge and deliver.
The 2021 season may be the most important of tight end Mark Andrews’ career. Bateman should continue to serve as a safety net for Lamar Jackson while he is out. He’s had an average of 78 targets over the last three seasons. Since arriving in Baltimore, the former Oklahoma star may be on pace for his highest target share.
The Ravens offense will be interesting to watch, as it will be interesting to see if they make any changes to a game plan that has troubled them in their previous playoff appearances.
